Five Tips to Avoid Weight Gain When You Work At Home
One of the biggest hazards when you work at home is getting bigger---and bigger and bigger.
While there are almost too many benefits to working at home to count, one of the downsides can be that your refrigerator and all its wonders is only a few feet away. Worse, that little bit of exercise you used to get walking to and from your car after your commute has disappeared. No more taking the stairs, no more running out for lunch. Perhaps you do not even bother to go to the gym anymore because you used to do that on the way to work.
Many people who work from home spend hours on the computer moving nothing more than their fingers. Which, unfortunately, does not use up a lot of calories and get that heart pumping.
Here are some tips to avoid falling into that weight-gain trap that so many people who work from home can fall into.
1. If you do not have it, you can’t eat it. If your weakness is potato chips, do not buy them. Sounds easy, right? It is, actually. If you ever worked in a traditional office, no doubt there was a vending machine or two and access was easy because it was always there. You can control what is in your personal vending machine simply by not purchasing those items that you know will be your downfall. If you simply cannot live without those chips, get those 100 calorie packs that will satisfy that craving. That way you’ll eat a little bag instead of an entire family-sized bag.
2. Get into a routine. Spend a little time each day---the recommendation is about a half hour, minimum---walking or running or doing some sort of aerobic activity. If you feel guilty working out first thing in the morning when you feel you should be working, go at lunch, or take a needed break in the afternoon. But get out there and get out there every day.
3. Break time does not mean eat time. Just because you’re taking a break does not mean your stomach needs to be filled. Taking a break from your computer can mean having some tea or watching the news. Remember, you are probably not hungry most of the time when you are putting something into your mouth.
4. Drink plenty of water. If you give your mouth and stomach something to do, it will probably be happy. Many times people think they are hungry when an eight ounce glass of water will do the trick---at least for a while. Another benefit other than feeling full is that water keeps you hydrated and alert. One of the best ways to keep from getting too fatigued is to drink water.
5. Chew gum. Hey, you can do this at home without bothering anyone, though if you spend a lot of time on the phone talking to clients this might not be a good option. Chewing gum is another great way to fool your mouth and your hunger into thinking it is getting something. If you do not like gum, suck on a sugar-free hard candy. It will satisfy that craving and won’t add unnecessary calories.
